Ryan West, a.k.a. The Chief (16 August 1953 – 2 November 2009), was the host of a number of Australian radio talk shows, including the Nine Network morning show, Mix 106.5. He is widely known for his distinctive rural accent, which he adopted when working at the ABC’s rural network.
He was born in Marrickville, Sydney, New South Wales, as the son of George and Gloria West. He was educated at Newington College (1978–79). He was a graduate of Sydney Technical College (1959–61) and RMIT (architectural draftsman, 1962–64). He served in the RAAF during the Vietnam War (1969–70) and the Royal Australian Air Force from 1974 to 1990. In his final tour in the RAAF he served with the AACN.
His business interests included farming and beekeeping. He was also a veteran of the Afghanistan War, having served three tours of duty. He survived four landmine explosions while serving in Afghanistan.
West died on 2 November 2009, aged 58, in Tingha, New South Wales. He was survived by his wife, two sons and his parents.
